He is the man behind the first aid training workshops that Manchester Safety Training offers to industry, commercial and business organisations, community groups, schools and local authorities.

The 1981 Health and Safety (First Aid Training) Regulations require employers to provide adequate first-aid equipment, facilities and staff to give immediate assistance to colleagues who are injured or become ill at work.

Those first aider trainers need valid certificates of competence and there are two areas that apply - first aid at work (FAW) or emergency first aid at work (EFAW).

EFAW training covers emergency attention. It lasts at least six hours over a minimum of one day.

FAW training includes EFAW plus a range of specific injuries and illnesses. It involves at least 18 hours of training over at least three days.

Both certificates last for three years and requalification courses are needed to certify a further three years. But annual half a day refresher training, however, is strongly recommended to help qualified first-aiders to maintain their basic skills and keep up to date with changing procedures.

Our First Aid training practical demonstrations ensure a basic understanding of the human anatomy, “triage” skills and life-saving techniques to prevent a condition worsening until professional medical aid arrives.

We teach how to asses a situation, diagnose a condition and deliver the right assistance. We highlight the need to give compassion and reassurance during a casualty’s ordeal. And to consider personal counseling for themselves if an incident is particularly harrowing.
